Speech of Mr. Vladimir SPIDLA, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the European Social Fund.
Welcome on the website of the Sectoral Operational Programme Human Resources Development 2007-2013 (SOP HRD), one of the programmes financed from the European Social Fund in Romania, under the responsibility of the Managing Authority for the Sectoral Operational Programme for Human Resources Development. MESSAGE of Minister of Labour, Family and Social Protection A tremendous opportunity is rising in front of us: over 4 billion euro in 7 years to be used in Romania to improve competences and the capacity to adapt to a continuosly changing labour market. With the support of the European Union we want to promote employment by improving the education and training systems, by developing counselling services for people in search of a job, by investing in the capacity of enterprises and workers to face the global challenges. We also want to ensure the inclusion of marginalised persons on the labour market. The Sectoral Operational Programme Human Resources Development, financed from the European Social Fund and by the Romanian Government, is investing in people, the most important asset of our country. The launch of this programme was on the same date with the celebration of 50 years since the creation of the European Social Fund, 50 years of investments in programmes for human resources in the EU member states. Therefore, we can say that we are now joining a long European tradition centred on improving employment opportunities and working conditions. Over 1,500,000 persons in Romania will have the chance to benefit from training, scholarships, support for innovation and entrepreneurship, measures for social inclusion. We are waiting for the creative involvement of schools, universities, associations and fundations, enterprises and public institutions and we are encouraging them to take action and prepare projects which will address the real needs of the Romanian society.
